One of the greateast names in the new Brazilian printmaking, Kika Levy places a full academic and research repertoire at the mercy of winds – of discovery, deviation, chance and the instant. Thus, she creates a world of subtleties, overlapping of images, residues of impressions, scraps and leftovers, which reflects an intimate and intense relationship with nature and that is consolidated in constant mutation.
Whether through the exact geometry of cubes and icosahedrons or the untamed nature of plants, foliage and clouds, Kika Levy transits between the rational and the intuitive, the exact and the imprecise. Tensing the boundaries between engraving, drawing and object, the artist creates pieces that put forward a particular and two-dimensional reading of the morphology of stones, foliage and landscapes, faithful to an artistic dynamic that combines formalism and organicity. Having engraving as her original field of action – the production of images from incisions and impressions in a stone, wood or metal matrix – Kika abandons any trace of rigidity in the medium, expanding the poetic function of the engraved image and of language itself. She is interested in the flow, the insistence on making, the elongated duration, and the exploratory coexistence with the image, always ready to metamorphose. “Thus, what we see as work, far from being configured as something that has reached the point of perfection or that is connected to a feeling of contentment having reached the ‘thing done’ and fulfilled duties, is a bundle of forces and times, in which gestures have piled up and temporarily have ceased to act, but their echoes can still be heard, tools piercing the language, the lines, the images, the papers,” as defined by the curator Galciani Neves.
