The dreamlike and idealized sea of the Northeast, in paintings with subtle personal and social connotations, permeates Guilherme Santos da Silva’s So the candle won’t fade, where more or less identifiable sailboats are inserted into natural landscapes, creating a dreamlike visual world of their own. A self-taught artist, Guilherme’s canvases evoke both his experience in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, where he lives and works, and the memory of his grandparents, who came from Cajá, in Paraíba, on a forced move to Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s – a crossing “laden with melancholy” and which produced in the artist the inherited feeling of always being out of place.
