Paula Juchem: Creature - Janaina Torres

Sao Paulo Brazil

Paula Juchem

Creature

In her first solo show at Janaina Torres Gallery, Paula Juchem expands the possibilities of ceramics in a unique visual repertoire at once playful and intriguing, marked by the organicity of its forms, which evoke traces of animals, fungi and bacteria, among other living beings that dwell on Earth in all its plurality. The result are possible and unusual beings – creatures that only exist within the universe of her work.

VIEWS

Does it still make sense to divide things between natural and artificial? Between reality and fantasy? True or absurd? The ceramic sculptures brought together in the exhibition Creature dwell in the fragile limits of such dichotomies. Fragments of biological forms appear in between layers and accumulations of clay and glaze, in the many accidents that single out Paula Juchem’s production, breaking expectations and destabilizing narratives.

BIO

Stretching the boundaries between reality and fantasy, Paula Juchem creates a world of her own sculpted in ceramics, populated by fantastic beings and objects, hallucinogenic totems and fragments of organic forms that appear between layers and accumulations of clay and glaze. A designer who incorporated ceramics into her work to shape a vision of the world – baroque, asymmetrical, excessive, enchanted and enchanting – Paula Juchem created her artistic imagination from contact with water and nature during her childhood in Rio Grande do Sul. In Ravenna, Italy, where she lived for around 15 years, she took her first steps in the art of clay.

From then on, she began experimenting with techniques, modeling, ornaments and glazes on pieces produced with clay in a way that was unusual within the ceramics tradition. In Paula Juchem’s work, ceramics are detached from their utilitarian character, acquiring freedom and expressiveness in a poetic hybrid between drawing, painting and sculpture. Paula thus aligns herself with a broader movement in art over the last two decades, revitalizing the three-dimensional based on the particularities and possibilities of this material. The natural, the organic, the handmade and the familiar are all attributes of this ancient technique which, as Paula Juchem’s sculptures and objects show, has an affinity and strength unprecedented in the 21st century.
