Son of Xangô and grandson of Mestre Didi, Antônio Oloxedê carries on the beliefs and art of the Yoruba tradition in the terreiros of Salvador. Artist and Ojé (ancestral cult priest), Oloxedê produces enchanted sculptures that are the fruit of dreams, rites and living with the Orixás, creating mythically-inspired pieces that transcend form and matter.
Antonio Oloxedê continues the aesthetic and spiritual saga of Mestre Didi, in sculptures from the Yoruba tradition and also in the ancient cult of Babá Egun, a manifestation that originated in West Africa and lives on in Brazil through Ilê Asipà, in Salvador. As well as a religious site, Asipà is also Oloxedê’s studio, which updates and adds its own elements – such as color, openness to the world and joy – to the sculptural technique, fusing African ancestry and worldview with the experience of life in contemporary Bahia. Using elements extracted from nature, such as wood, sisal, bamboo, straw, conch shells and beads and objects characteristic of candomblé clothing used in rituals, Oloxedê produces works in which he manipulates objects and emblems that express sacred entities, symbols of Yoruba visual grammar, such as birds, snakes, spears, scepters and flames, which are reworked by the artist. In a mystical coexistence with the artistic process, populated by dreams, callings and coexistence with the orixás – “I always pay homage to the three: Xangô, Ogum and Oxossi” – Oloxedê proposes art as a tool for social and transcendental transformation, genuine works of axé (good vibrations).
