Sandra Mazzini reinvigorates new Brazilian painting with exuberant canvases that activate the viewer’s vision and challenge their perception. Starting from classic elements, such as the modernist grid and images of forests, architecture and bucolic scenes, Sandra deconstructs them into a myriad of autonomous elements, which interlock like paintings within paintings – forming unstable, complex and fascinating landscapes.
Sandra Mazzini (1990) was born in São Paulo (SP), where she lives and works. She has a degree in Visual Arts from Unesp-SP, where she worked as a resident at the 509 free studio, technically assisting young artists and developing their work in painting. A highlight of the new generation of Brazilian artists, Sandra Mazzini’s painting proposes an alteration of reality based on the new perspectives presented by the vibrant visual layers present in her works. Her canvases integrate techniques from the past and the present in challenging harmony. Digital resources for capturing images and preparing the grid are mixed with a refined painting technique, where the figurative element sometimes reaches abstraction. “Her work blurs the traditional categories of painting, photography and drawing, and is undeniably contemporary, immersed in an idyllic vision of our exuberant nature. At the same time, each work is permeated by a constant pulse, a vibration that goes beyond the landscape it represents,” says curator Denise Mattar. Her work has been exhibited at venues such as the National Museum of the Republic (DF), the Ribeirão Preto Art Museum (SP) and the Santander Lighthouse (SP), and is part of important public and private collections.
In emblematic works such as Mangueiras e Barranco em Ibiúna, 2017, Rio Vermelho, 2018, Tamoios, 2018, Floresta Crescente, 2019, Território de Ilusões, 2019 and Por do Sol, 2020, Sandra Mazzini presents us with foliage enveloped in light, encounters of land and water, interweaving of flowers and forests, illusions of perspective, reflections of sky and sea, imagined gardens and portals, realized in delicate and vigorous constructions.
