In delicate brushstrokes and passages of color, full of evocations and reminiscences, Guilherme Santos da Silva shows a politically and ethically motivated painting, a plastic response that combines tradition and personal experience – in this case, the family environment in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro – and the history that painting, as a language and process, carries.
A self-taught artist, Guilherme Santos da Silva (Rio de Janeiro, 1987) began his artistic experience by painting walls and façades in an urban context. Inspired by Brazil’s cultural margins, linked to his experiences and family memories, especially his grandparents, migrants from Paraíba who arrived in Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s, he moved on to canvases, in works with subtle personal and social connotations. Guilherme translates his work, made up of subtleties between figures and shapes, between suggestions of landscapes, elements and pure geometric shapes, into harmonious compositions, on planes where color and matter define the state of mind and the contrast with time in the painting. The delicate passages of color and brushstrokes nevertheless carry the force of elements that involve the artist’s biography, in a dialogue between affections and political questioning around narratives of class and belonging from different social strata, notably on the outskirts of large cities such as Rio de Janeiro.
