Tensing the limits between reality and fantasy, Paula Juchem creates her own world sculpted in ceramics, populated by fantastic beings and objects, hallucinogenic totems and fragments of organic forms that appear between layers and accumulations of clay and glaze.
Paula Juchem is a draftswoman who incorporated ceramics into her work in order to, whence, shape a vision of the world, baroque, asymmetrical, excessive, enchanted and charming. Paula created her artistic imaginary from her contact with water and nature, in the childhood spent in Rio Grande do Sul. In Ravenna, Italy, where she lived for about 15 years, she took the first steps in the art of clay. From there on, she started experimenting with techniques, modeling, ornaments, and glazes in pieces produced with clay in a way unusual within the ceramics tradition. In Paula Juchem’s work, ceramics detaches from its utilitarian character, acquiring freedom and expressiveness in a hybrid poetics placed between drawing, painting and sculpture. Paula is thus aligned with a broader trend in the art of the past two decades, that of the revitalization of the three-dimensional grounded on the particularities and possibilities of clay. The natural, the organic, the handmade and the familiar are attributes of this millennial technique, which features, as Paula Juchem’s sculptures and objects show, an affinity with unprecedented strength in the 21st century.
