Pedro Moraleida’s (1977-1999) brief and compelling trajectory left as a legacy a considerable body of work, which draws attention for its uniqueness, coherence, vigor and courage to face the prevailing apathy around him – not only in the arts. Dedicated to delving into universes all his own, the young Moraleida dared to ignore trends, with the courage of one who cuts into his own flesh to expose fears, desires and dreams, determined to engage with all that exists and disturbs. An enfant terrible, in short: a full and uncontrollable romantic artist, who influenced a whole generation of young Minas Gerais artists, by confronting, through the affirmation of drawing and painting, the then dominant conceptual art. “It is an extraordinary body of work, made by an extraordinary artist and that needs to be shown, known and studied,” says Hans Ulrich Obrist, one of the most influential curators of the current scene, who took Moraleida’s work abroad for the first time in the show Imagine Brazil (2013). It is an expressive collection boasting 1,900 pieces, including 1,450 drawings and 150 paintings, which has achieved immediate repercussion and admiration when it was shown in Brazil and worldwide. Art thus inherits a work of boundless intensity, fruit of an artist who dares to reveal what is seductive and haunting in each and every person.
